How it works

This unit converter handles four categories: length (metres, centimetres, millimetres, kilometres, inches, feet, yards, miles), weight (grams, kilograms, ounces, pounds, stone), temperature (Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin), and volume (millilitres, litres, centilitres, fluid ounces, cups, pints, gallons).

The conversion works by converting the input value to a base unit, then converting from that base unit to the target unit. This ensures accuracy across all conversion paths — for example, converting miles to kilometres goes through metres as the intermediate step, so the result is accurate regardless of which two units you select.

Common uses:

  • DIY and home improvement: convert between metric and imperial for materials, room measurements, or furniture dimensions
  • Cooking and recipes: convert between metric volume units, or fluid ounces to millilitres
  • Fitness and health: convert body weight between stone and kilograms
  • Education: science experiments, geography, physics — any subject where students need quick unit conversions

Metric vs imperial: the UK uses a mix of both in practice — road signs are in miles and kilometres, body weight is often in stone, while cooking uses metric. This converter handles both systems so visitors can convert freely regardless of which they prefer.

Temperature note: Kelvin conversions assume an absolute temperature scale starting from absolute zero. For everyday temperature comparisons (e.g. oven settings), Celsius and Fahrenheit are the most commonly used.
